Quadratic Expressions

Unit 5

In Unit Five of the Grade Ten Math Course, we learned how to multiply polynomials. We also learned how to multiply a binomial and a expand a simplify polynomial expressions. Lastly we learned how to factor quadratic expressions.

To multiply a binomial, you first must multiply the first variable in the first set of brackets by the first variable in the second set of brackets. Then you multiply the first variable again by the second number/variable in the second set of brackets. You repeat this process with the second number/variable in the first set of brackets.

This is also referred to as expanding a polynomial. Although if there is a number in front of the brackets, you must first multiply that number into the brackets before multiplying the binomial.

To simplify the now expanded polynomial, you have to collect like terms.

To factor an expression you have to find a set of numbers that multiply to to last number and adds to the first one. You then use those two numbers to replace the number in the middle. Although don’t forget to add the variable that was on the middle number, to the two that you are replacing it with.

The other way to factor would be to remove the GCF of the first variable and the second variable and then put the common GCF’s in brackets, and the remaining numbers in brackets.
